Guide to setting up and managing NeoGate Kiosk

Installation

Contact hello@getneogate.com to request the installer. Run it as Administrator on the target machine.

The installer will:

  • Install the kiosk browser, Config Tool, and watchdog
  • Optionally create desktop shortcuts
  • Optionally enable auto-start at Windows login
Requires Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Administrator rights are needed for installation only.

First Launch

After installation, open NeoGate Kiosk Config from the desktop shortcut or Start menu. Configure at minimum:

  1. Set your Start URL (the website the kiosk will display)
  2. Set an Admin Passcode (minimum 4 characters)
  3. Click Save Changes

Then launch NeoGate Kiosk — it will open full-screen and lock to your URL.

Config Tool

The Config Tool is a graphical settings panel included with the installation. Changes take effect the next time the kiosk is started.

General Settings

Start URL

The page loaded on startup and after every session reset. Must begin with https://.

Session Clear

Controls when cookies, local storage, and browser data are wiped. Options: Disabled, On Inactivity, On Close, Always.

Lock to Start URL Domain

When enabled, navigation outside the start URL's domain is silently blocked. Subdomains are always permitted. Enabled by default.

Idle & Screensaver

Inactivity Reset

Automatically returns to the Start URL after the configured number of idle seconds. Clears session data on reset.

Attract Mode

Plays a fullscreen media slideshow (JPG, PNG, MP4) from a chosen folder when idle. Any touch or click exits the screensaver.

On-Screen Keyboard

A floating, draggable soft keyboard that appears automatically when a text input is focused. Designed for touch screens without a physical keyboard.

Adjust Keyboard Width and Position (Left / Center / Right) to fit your screen layout.

Security

Block Task Manager

Removes Task Manager from the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen via a Windows registry policy. Change Password, Sign Out, and Switch User remain accessible. The Ctrl+Alt+Del keypress itself cannot be blocked at the OS level.

Important: If the kiosk crashes while this is active, the watchdog automatically restores access within seconds. Use Restore Now in the Config Tool if you need to restore access manually.

Popup Tabs

Controls whether links that open new windows are shown as additional tabs inside the kiosk. Set a maximum tab count to prevent tab accumulation.

Admin Passcode

A numeric or alphanumeric code required to exit the kiosk. Stored securely — it cannot be recovered if forgotten; set a new one instead.

Admin Unlock (Corner Gesture)

To exit the kiosk on a touch screen without a keyboard:

  1. Tap the four screen corners in sequence:
    Top-Left → Top-Right → Bottom-Right → Bottom-Left
  2. Enter your passcode on the numeric keypad that appears
  3. The kiosk exits and the watchdog pauses briefly to allow maintenance

Watchdog

A background monitor runs automatically and restarts the kiosk if it crashes or is unexpectedly closed.

  • Starts automatically at Windows login
  • After an intentional admin exit, pauses briefly before restarting to allow updates
  • Restores all security settings before every restart

Troubleshooting

Task Manager still restricted after crash

Open the Config Tool → Security → click Restore Now. This immediately removes all registry restrictions.

Settings not taking effect

Most settings require a kiosk restart to take effect. Save changes in the Config Tool, then restart the kiosk.
